How To Survive Long Layovers and Flights

Here are some tips I’ve learned to survive the long hauls.

If you’re anything like me, then you need to be at the airport 3 hours early. It means I spend a lot of time waiting. Here are my top tips for dealing with long flights and layovers!

1. Preparation is key.

  • Charge your devices and have a portable battery charged!

  • All the snacks! Try a low-salt and non-smelly, your fellow passengers will thank you! I love with the small squeezable packs from Justin's almond butter.

  • Download your favorite television shows, and movies (Shout out to Netflix and Amazon Prime!)

  • Lastly, check the status of your flight before you leave.

2.  Dressing for Airplanes

I always wear my heaviest shoes, to save on weight! I focus on layers. Leggings or comfortable pants, a tank top, and a cardigan or sweater, along with my favorite scarf! It doubles as a pillow, a blanket, even an eye mask.

I use a travel pillow now, and my life has changed! I use it both as lumbar support, seat cushion, or pillow. I would recommend one with memory foam as opposed to the beans. More support that way. I purchased mine in the UK from TK Maxx. I would recommend there TJ Maxx or Marshalls.

3. Beauty

I always have about four chapsticks circulating me.

If I do an overnight flight, I do a sheet mask. My skin gets dried from the airplane air, so a sheet mask with rejuvenating or hydro boos is what I amt is key. You can get cheap ones at a local pharmacy.

I also forgo makeup, but I always do my eyebrows! If you are desperate for makeup, I would suggest waiting till after your flight or before you get on.

And I always carry an empty water bottle because hydration is key.

4. Miscellaneous

  • Download your airline mobile applications.

  • Find a good seat near a flight information board in the airport.

  • Take regular bathroom breaks.

  • Be mindful of handling your luggage. The last thing you want to do is strain a muscle before getting on a long-haul flight.

5. Now things I wish I could do on long-haul layovers.

  • Lay on the floor and cry.

  • Lay on the floor and take a nap.

  • Splurge on an airline lounge pass

  • Splurge on first-class tickets.

Last tip for all you go-people!

Bring some candy for your flight attendants! I recommend individually wrapped candies, preferably hard candies. I usually get Werther's Original. Often this doesn’t lead to anything, but I find it to be a nice gesture for a hard-working flight crew. I've been looking into different travel credit cards, I’ve heard great things about Chase and Capital One.
