Question 1

Is Montreal worth visiting for a first-time traveler?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Montreal hits a rare sweet spot — it feels genuinely European (French signage, cobblestone streets, incredible food culture) while being easy to navigate as a North American. You don't need a car, most people are bilingual, and the city rewards slow exploration. If you've been putting it off, consider this your sign. It's one of the most underrated cities on the continent.

Question 2

Do you need to speak French to visit Montreal?

Accepted Answer

Nope. Most Montrealers are bilingual and will switch to English the moment they sense you're struggling. That said, a few polite phrases go a long way — try 'Désolé. Anglais, s'il vous plaît' and you'll be met with warmth almost every time. Download Google Translate before you go for menus and signage, and you're set.

Question 3

How many days do you need in Montreal?

Accepted Answer

Four full days is the sweet spot for slow travelers. That gives you time to explore Old Montreal, wander the Plateau, hit a market or two, do a day trip outside the city, and still have a slow morning or two with nowhere to be. If you're a fast-paced itinerary person, you could see the highlights in two to three days — but where's the fun in that?

Question 4

How much does a trip to Montreal cost?

Accepted Answer

A 5-day trip (4 nights) can come in at around $1,200 USD — covering travel insurance, half the hotel, a full car rental, food, tours, rideshares, and souvenirs. Montreal is genuinely affordable by big-city standards, especially compared to New York or Toronto. You can eat very well without spending a lot.

Question 5

What's the best neighborhood to stay in Montreal?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your vibe. For first-timers who want to be close to everything, downtown or the area near Berri-UQAM metro is a great base — central, walkable, and easy to get anywhere. If you want the locals-only feel, aim for Plateau Mont-Royal: colorful staircases, independent cafés, and the kind of neighborhood energy you actually want to soak in. Old Montreal is gorgeous but leans more touristy and pricier.

Question 6

Is Montreal easy to get around without a car?

Accepted Answer

Very. The STM metro is clean, fast, and easy to navigate. A 3-day unlimited pass runs around $16 USD and covers buses and subways, including the 747 airport express. Most neighborhoods are also incredibly walkable. You genuinely don't need a car for Montreal itself — only if you're planning a day trip outside the city.

Question 7

What's the best time of year to visit Montreal?

Accepted Answer

Late spring through early fall is peak season — and for good reason. Summers (June–August) are warm, lively, and packed with festivals. Fall is beautiful if you want fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. Winter in Montreal is no joke (think serious cold), but the city doesn't shut down — there's a whole underground city for a reason.

Question 8

What are the must-eat foods in Montreal?

Accepted Answer

Poutine is the obvious answer — and yes, you should eat it. But don't stop there. Montreal bagels (thinner, denser, slightly sweet) are genuinely different from New York bagels and worth the argument. Smoked meat sandwiches, especially from a deli in the Jewish Quarter, are a must. And if you wander through Jean-Talon Market, just follow your nose.
